In a world where material objects are quickly replaced, the Mantis chair encourages us to pause, slow down, and appreciate the craftsmanship of wood making. While the chair's design is incredibly simple, it is far from minimal. It exudes a modern aesthetic while paying homage to the designs that inspired it. Sibille's intention was to create a piece that reflects his vision of a sustainable, honest, simple, and functional world.
The production process for the Mantis chair is refreshingly straightforward. The only required component is a metallic hardware that joins the armrests with the backrest, which can be easily manufactured. The chair is also upholstered for added comfort and style.
With dimensions of 620mm in depth, 530mm in width, and 755mm in height, the Mantis chair is designed to fit seamlessly into any space. Its versatility allows it to be used as a dining chair or a home desk chair, making it a practical and stylish addition to any interior.
Throughout the design process, Sibille faced the challenge of creating a chair that could be mass-produced within a reasonable budget. Despite the limitations of manufacturing capabilities in Uruguay, he successfully adapted the design to ensure it paid homage to Scandinavian design while remaining accessible to a wider audience. The result is a chair that is simple in its construction but ambitious in its devotion to historical respect.
The Mantis chair evokes a sense of nostalgia, transporting us back to a time when furniture was crafted with care and attention to detail. Made from ash wood and featuring metal hardware and upholstery, this piece is a true testament to the enduring beauty of mid-twentieth century design.
Photographed by Arai Moleri, the Mantis chair has garnered attention and recognition within the design community. In 2016, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
The Mantis chair is a timeless creation that seamlessly blends the past with the present. Its elegant design and functional versatility make it a must-have piece for those who appreciate the beauty of mid-twentieth century design and the convenience of modern living.
